I am witty...

Once again, its about to be PARTY TIME! Here's a copy of the evites I sent out this week. If you didn't receive one, it is probably attributable to one of the following:
1. I do not have your email address, and that's YOUR fault for not keeping in contact with me enough, so really you're only hurting yourself.
2. I have assessed the situation and have come to the conclusion that you live too far away, and will probably not be able to attend anyway.
3. We were friends at one time, and although you are in close enough proximity, you may have done something recently to piss me off such as broken plans, failed to return multiple calls or have forgotten my birthday in the past (if you are guilty of more than one of the above, then you are insane for even wondering why you did not receive an evite)
3. You are in prison.
4. I simply don't like you (this is a tough one because I'm fairly open minded when it comes to most anyone, so if I, of all people don't like you then you should seek some serious help because most likely others dislike you as well).
CHEERS!

Hello everyone! Given the HUGE success of our Halloween Party this year, the ladies of Saint Marks Avenue have decided to throw a Holiday Party on the 3rd Saturday in December, and your presence is not just requested, it is commanded!

Come join us for coctails, snacks, and fun times to either celebrate the Holidays (if you are sappy and traditional like most people) or to formally denounce the Holidays in style (if you are the cynical Scrooge type like me)!

Come prepared to do a ton of drinking, snacking, dancing (remember Halloween?), laughing, and canoodling at our pad. Feel free to bring your favorite snack or beverage to share. Also, bring or forward this evite to whoever you'd like- the more the merrier (and I DO mean "merrier" in a non-Santa kind of way).

We hope to see you there- especially if you didn't make it to the Halloween party. I roll by a two strikes rule, so if this is #2 for you, have a nice life.

Anyway, clear your calendars! Peace.

Talia, Sarah, and Stephanie
(please note that I have signed my roomates' names to this evite without their approval of the content of same)

On the agenda...

If you know anything about me, you are fully aware that my personal schedule is teeming with extra curricular activities! I am the type of person that NEEDS to be busy 24/7 just to feel like I'm making the most of my precious time on this planet :)

Also, since I am not currently intellectually or fundamentally fulfilled by my current job, (but hey it pays the bills) I have found ways to inject myself into the industries in which I am most happy- entertainment and intellectual property. This is a good way to keep abreast of the laws, show my face in the right places, and have loads of fun (I know, Im a big dork). Anyway, Im super pumped about two programs I'm attending next week, and I thought I would share them. The titles of the programs, alone, make me giddy with excitement. Oh, to some day get PAID for doing the things that I love.....

Im a sucker for blue eyes

Remember my summer love affair with Jared Leto? Ok, so what if much of it was in my head, but we DID make eye contact, and we DID stand within mere feet of each other in 2 different states in a matter of a few months (Lollapalooza and the VMAs)! Anyway, I have always been a sucker for a nice set of baby blues, and Jared has quite a set!

Here's a video of his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, on AOL Sessions, doing a cover of Message in a Bottle, originally recorded by The Police. Yeah, he's a skinny scarf wearing little freak, but I love him anyway!

Why am I such a snot?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

News flash: I have a cold. However, I feel my condition can better be described as a violent warring power struggle inside my nose in which tiny evil organisms are battling against the native organisms of my nasal cavity causing such casualties as explosions, floods, land slides, and general unrest therein. Hey, at least I'm not coughing (fingers crossed).

In between blows, I decided to ask the all knowing internet where this never ending supply of matter is coming from that I keep directing with force into tissues and tossing in my waste basket. This is what I found via WebMD:

"Mucus (a.k.a. snot) is the sticky liquid that coats the skin and hairs in your nose. It has a special bacteria-killing chemical, and it also keeps junk from reaching your lungs, explains Branzei. "Snot is so important that your nose makes a new batch every 20 minutes."
Boogers are actually "nose garbage," she writes. "Each day, you suck in a small roomful of air. If the air was only gas, you would not even make boogers. But the air is filled with dust, smoke, grit, bacteria, tiny fungi, pollen, soot, little metal pieces, ash, fuzz, sand, and even itty bitty meteorites. One job of the nose is to clean the stuff out."
This nose-cleaning system is so effective that the nasal area is one of the cleanest parts of your body, Branzei adds. However, allergies and pollutants will trigger inflammation in the sinus lining, which creates sinus drainage, Horesh explains. "For some people, that means a runny nose, for other people, it's post-nasal drip."

Hidden Treasures

Hello and welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend, I know that I sure did!

Yesterday, after I got back to BK I went to Target (cuz I was wide awake already) and decided to browse aisle by aisle looking for ways to spend the $80 that I saved by using public transportation to and from the airport this past weekend. As usual, I happened upon the music department and was pleasantly surprised to find several of the bands I like on the "Under $10" rack in Target's CD section! I chose 2 of at least 5 cds that I wanted, and struck gold on one of them.
I picked up the latest album from Hello Goodbye, entitled, Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!, released on Drive-Thru Records. I was already familiar with "Here (in your arms)", which is track #2 on the album, but I quickly discovered that I liked the entire album, especially "Oh, it is love" (track #6), with ukulele accompaniment, and "Baby, it's fact" (track #7). The lyrics are sweet, and I mean that in an "awww" kind of way, as opposed to a skateboard trick kind of way! The music is poppy, upbeat, and slightly emo, and
has a kind of 80s sound with the use of synthesizer. Its the kind of music that makes you want to jump around and smile while listening.
As an added bonus, if you buy the album in stores, you get a sample cd from Drive-Thru Records with a few tracks from some of their other artists (I'm just listening to that now, so I can't yet tell ya if its any good or not).

Check out Hello Goodbye on their website or on Myspace

Listen to Here (in your arms)
Listen to Oh, it is love

I also picked up the latest album from Plain White T's, entitled, Every Second Counts, primarily because I like their song called "Hate (I really don't like you)". Unfortunately, pretty much every song on the album sounds the same, and "Hate" is the only track I actually like. Check them out on myspace and see for yourself.

Oh Snap!

Rupert Murdoch must read my blog, or maybe its the rest of the country's uproar against that ridiculous OJ simpson book/ tv special I mentioned the other day that got under his skin because he had the News Corporation pull the plug on the whole deal! The book, in which OJ was to describe how he would have killed Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson if, in fact, he HAD done so (biting my tongue) will not be sold, and the corresponding two-part TV show will not air. Murdoch issued the following statement:

“I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project,” Mr. Murdoch said. “We are sorry for any pain this has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson.”

To this I, Talia T. Page, Esq., officially respond: "Duh!"

Bob Dylan No Direction Home

Here's a clip from the funny Bob Dylan video that I told you about. It's from No Direction Home, a documentary directed by Martin Scorsese, and focuses on Dylan's career from 1961-1966. Click here for more info on No Direction Home. Click the image below to watch on YouTube:

Enjoy! Thanks Beth for finding this for me!

Some good stuff for ya...

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had an amazing weekend! I checked out that Bob Dylan exhibit on Friday night (see details below) and it was awesome! Among the highlights were typed lyrics to Masters of War, on which Bob himself made edits and scribbled notes, AND a hilarious video of Mr. Dylan in London in the 60s making fun of an advertisement painted on a building wall. (If I can find it on YouTube or somewhere else on the vast and magnificent interweb, I'll post it for ya!)

Thanks to the always amazing Pedro, I am happy to share with you the new Apples in Stereo album, The New Magnetic Wonder, which is to be released on Elija Wood's new indie label, Simian Records in February 2007! Check out some of the older (very Beatle-esque) stuff on their Myspace page or my favorite AOL Music. Click here for more on The Apples in Stereo. Pedro and I tried to go see Apples at Irving Plaza during CMJ, but sadly we were denied admission due to the venue being at capacity.

Speaking of Frodo, Remember when I ran into Elija Wood at a show at the Slipper Room last winter? If not, here's a little something to refresh your memory:

What's with Gum?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

And why on earth do we need to know so freaking much about the pack of gum anyway? Im pretty sure that when most of us buy a pack of gum you basically know what your in for. You pop it in your mouth, have a little chew, and go on with your life, no? As far as Im concerned, the package could simply say "Gum" and I'd buy it. But noooo! At some point we decided that gum wasn't just for chewing anymore. Nope, we have gum that whitens your teeth, curbs your appetite, keeps you awake, and prevents you from smoking! This is an outrage! Now I have to read the back of a pack of freaking gum before I buy it just to ensure that its not going to do something unexpected to me such as lower my sperm count or stimulate hair growth! (yes, I am aware that I do not produce sperm, but Im trying to make a point)

Psssshhhh! I'm better off keeping my jaw busy with a good old fashioned pen cap! At least (for now) there is never any concern as to whether my pen contains a milk derived ingredient!

YAY- NEW SEGMENT!!! What's with...

Hey! So, I came up with a great idea for a new segment! You know how Stephen Colbert, from the Colbert Report, puts stuff "on notice"? Well, I'd like to do something similar on my blog, instead its going to be called "What's with...?" and I'll put new inquiries about the strangness of our planet on a billboard each week! I will start it, but I invite everyone else to submit new "What's with....?" inquiries! If there's just something that you cannot figure out, no matter how hard you boggle your mind, then holler at me, and we'll toss it up on the "What's with...?" board!

I'll start.....

You gotta be kidding me!

The biggest event to unfold during my high school career was not Senior Prom, nor was it ascending to the national Pom Pon finals and dancing on ESPN at Disneyworld. In actuality it was the O.J. Simpson trial for me!

I still remember where I was , in 9th grade, when the white Ford Bronco was being chased: I was in Meredith's mom's taurus wagon, getting dropped off at Liz's house to supposedly celebrate her birthday with a sleepover (actually we walked over a mile to a party where I was publically drunk for the first time in my life at the age of 14 and uttered the now famous quotes "I puked on my shoes" and "when does this feeling go away?")

I also remember being in Ms. Beck's English class when the bogus verdict was announced, and Jeff D. was standing on a chair holding the cord to the channel 1 tv and getting really frustrated because he couldn't move or else we would lose reception.

Senior year, when we were told in Mrs. Carney's speech class to pick a topic about which we were passionate, I chose the O.J. Simpson trial, and turned my speech final into a closing argument for the state.

(I am clearly a fan of this ass-clown)

Anyway, for this reason, I find the following information absolutely nauseating: O.J. Simpson has written a book, entitled "If I did It", in which he describes hypothetically how he would have committed the murders, if in fact it was him that had committed them and not the Trix Rabbit (which is the only logical explanation). If you are like me and would rather eat the toe nails of a homeless person than contribute to the O.J. Simpson 'I Got Away With Murder' fund, you can catch a two-part tell all interview on Fox, set to air November 27 and 29, where Simpson himself says, I presume, something akin to "blah blah blah, I am not a murderer, blah blah blah..." for about an hour.

Little Manhattan- Possibly the best movie EVER!

Yesterday I had to leave work early, as I was terribly ill and a raging hormonal mess (par usual every 28 days). So, after stopping at the drug store to spend $32 on remedies, I took the longest train ride ever to my house, popped some extra strength painkillers, and crashed into bed with my brand new heating pad. I decided to watch a movie to keep my mind off of my pain and discomfort, and I chose the movie Little Manhattan, which was available on demand on HBO.
Just let me tell you this: Little Manhattan is an adorably beautiful, cleverly told love story, narrated by the protagonist, who happens to be a 10 year old boy. In approximately 85 minutes, this 5th grader paints an amazingly accurate picture of a first true love. Im assuming my reaction was somewhat influenced by my heightened hormonal output, but I was crying like a baby as early as the opening credits! However, I am in a much better condition today, so I tested myself by watching the trailer on YouTube just now, and I teared up again! It is with 100% confidence and infinite pleasure that I recommend Little Manhattan to all of you! I promise, you will not be disappointed (unless you are a heartless rogue). Sweet doesn't even begin to describe this movie!

Watch the trailer and decide for yourself!

Bored at work?

Try this! Go to Clairol.com to their try it on studio, create an account, upload a picture of yourself, then browse various hair colors to see what you would look like! Which do you think I should choose? The top right is obviously the REAL me!

Dylan anyone?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
If you've taken the New York City subway any time recently you've probably noticed advertisements for the Bob Dylan exhibit on display now through January 6, 2007 at the Morgan Library & Museum in Manhattan.

The exhibit (which my roomate Sarah has seen and has raved about) "examines the critical ten-year period that coincides with Dylan's transformation from folk troubadour to rock innovator during a momentous, turbulent period of American history". Apparently there's a bunch of cool stuff like his old notebooks, handwritten lyrics and other equally cool Dylan artifacts!

Check out the website for the exhibit HERE. From what I've heard, the price is very reasonable (something like $12 per person) and is all inclusive for the other exhibits that are on display at the museum too!

I once saw a similar exhibit for John Lennon at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame a few years ago, and it was really cool to see the actuall coctail napkins that he used to brainstorm lyrics and song ideas! I love this kinda crap!

I did not forget about you Ex-Lion Tamer!

I have just been busier than usual! So, here's my plug:

Remember, when I mentioned that I was given some demo cds at the CMJ conference by a musician? Well, I listened to both of them- songs from 2 bands: Katamine and Ex-Lion Tamer. Ex Lion Tamer is an indie band from Israel. I enjoyed both. The Katamine stuff was pretty mellow acoustic ballad-type stuff. I have to say that most of the songs sounded very similar, but definately not bad!

The Ex-Lion Tamer stuff was much more intricate, but also pretty decent. You can listen to Ex-Lion Tamer on myspace HERE. Nice work, guys! Very nice to have met you :)

See, this is what I'm talking about...

well sort of...

Humiliated frat boys sue 'Borat' (click for full story)

Apparently some frat boys who appear in the new Borat movie, entitled Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, have sued 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp., and three production companies alleging that they were fed alcohol and lied to about the reason for the video cameras.

After their drunken behavior, which supposedly consisted of racist and sexist comments, appeared in the movie, the boys claimed that they "engaged in behavior that they otherwise would not have engaged in".

I AM NOT defending the frat boys, Im just saying you avoid all of this when you do a normal movie where actors are hired to follow a script. Noone is tricked or made a fool of against their knowledge (well usually anyway). Paid actors are willing submit to embarassment. Take Jennifer Aniston in 1993's Leprechaun- She knew exactly what she was doing there! She didn't wake up the next morning with a wicked hangover, and a sloppily signed waiver taped to her forehead!

Add this to the "Talia is correct" list. Thank you.

PSA & Talia's Song Pick-o-the-week

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
VOTE!
Just do it. It is your privilege as an AMERICAN and you have no reason not to.
My song pick-o-the-week is the politically charged
Undone
By, Pearl Jam
Last stop on the west coast line
South of the northern border
One small corner on my mind

Everybody, they know me there
Don't get any second glances
Chances are that they don't care

The world has come undone
Like to change it everyday
Change don't come at once
It's a wave... building before it breaks

Can't wait for election day
Witness the occupation
Corporations rule the day
Well you know the pendulum throws
Farther out to the one side, swinging
Has to sweep back the other way

The world has come undone
Another day and who can wait
Change don't come at once
It's a wave building before it breaks

All this hope and nowhere to go
This is how I used to feel, but no more
The world has come undone
Like a game that few can play
Change don't come from one
It's a wave... building before it breaks

My new favorite band!

Oh boy, I am gushing about my new favorite band which happens to be Margot & the Nuclear So and Sos! I had the pleasure of seeing them play at Rebel on Saturday night as part of CMJ, and they were awesome! Although they generically label themselves as indie/pop, I would hardly call their performance typical or ordinary. This eight piece ensemble includes a female keyboard player, a cello, a trumpet, and two percussionists! The ballads are smooth and delicate, while slightly emo, and the overall presentation is spectacular. You can tell they really enjoyed performing for the audience- especially when cutie bass player Tyler would smile while playing or when percussionist Casey Tennis would pause between tambourine shakes to do a little interpretive dance!

(My crush, Tyler <3)
Formed in 2004, in Indiana, Margot & the So and Sos released their debut album, The Dust of Retreat in 2005 on Artemis Records.

I highly recommend listening to them on AOL Interface.

True Love Never Dies

I know you all missed me yesterday but I went to the music law CLE program at CMJ all day and it was awesome! I networked, I learned new things about the sexiest intellectual property concepts on the planet, I ate brownies- the day was a success! I didn't even have to pimp myself out because I was asked for my resume by an attorney who practices entertainment in a big firm AND, after asking a very good question for the panel on ownership of user created content on the internet (myspace, blogs, etc) a musician approached me about my blog. He gave me his demo CDs and I promised to write a review for all my readers! Yeah, I know, Im hot potatos!

Anyway, so today I got one of the best text messages I have ever gotten, and I would like to share it with all of you. The sender will be kept anonymous if for no other reason than to be mysterious and annoying!

"I had a very Talia moment last night. I fell in love on a first date. And I likely believe I will woo this person until they fall in love with me."

What do you suppose this says about me? I think its a pretty good indicator that my friends (and this was a very dear one) see me as a passionate, enthusiastic, romantic who sees what she wants in love and in life and goes after it with conviction. I agree, and therefore, I like that story!

I thought about this text message and then reached into my bag for my journal that I keep on me at all times. You know, in case I need to write down a brilliant thought on the subway, or at the grocery store, or anywhere for that matter. Well, I thought this entry from a few weeks ago illustrates this point quite nicely. Its kinda long and completative so beware.

I have been grappling with the notion of Pearl Jam being magic for a while now. I say it often, and initially I actually believed it to be true. There are thousands of people around the world who know what I’m talking about and I wont’ go into all the details right now because, for me, that topic could fill volumes of prose. But, it all boils down to the effect the band has on fans, or believers as I like to think of us.

There is a clear psychological and often physical affect on me when it comes to Pearl Jam which is strong, powerful, inspirational, and ALWAYS positive. So, I thought, Pearl Jam must be magic. What I failed to realize however, is that its not the band- five (six counting Boom)talented mortals who play beautiful music. Its is not even the voice of Eddie Vedder, which at times is the closest thing I can imagine an angel’s voice would sound like. If Pearl Jam were magic, they would affect a far broader spectrum than their large, but finite fan base.

What is magic, I have discovered, is love. It is my love for Pearl Jam that causes the magical effects on me and my fellow jamily members! Anyone who has ever truly been in love with someone or something knows what I mean. I’m not talking about puppy love or infatuation. Everyone knows that those emotions have an expiration date. What I am talking about is pure, unadulterated, unconditional love. It might seem odd to discuss those aspect of love in the context of a band, but I, and I believe a number of my friends, am a testament to its existence. Like I said before, I could go on and on for days about Pearl Jam and how my love for the band is magical but that is not my point at the moment. I am simply bringing it up as an illustration of love’s magical manifestation.

It turns out that my love for people is quite similar. Passionate people experience love passionately- plain and simple. What can I say? We feel things deeply and on a level that many fail to acknowledge or explore. To some extent this can be difficult because when love is that intense it can cause great sorrow.

The way I can tell that my love for someone or something is the type I am describing is by the reactions I have to certain interactions with the subject. Its either there or its not, and it never goes away, no matter what the circumstances. It takes various forms and its affects on me vary, but once the seed is planted, so to speak, it endures into infinity. To return to my Pearl Jam example briefly, this is how I know that long after the band stops touring (God forbid, and I do hope this day never comes, but just assuming that Ed, Mike, Stone, Jeff, and Matt are NOT robots) I will be a Pearl Jam fan until the day I die, (and possibly longer depending on your faith) because I have the type of love for music that never dies.

If I were to go deaf and never audibly hear another Pearl Jam song as long as I lived, the music would play in my head as loudly as I experienced it on tour this summer and the magical effects on me would be just as prevalent and strong. So, the point that I am trying to celebrate, and that I thank God for every day is that I experience true, undying love for a number of people and things in my life, and this, my friends, is magic.

If the unthinkable happened and Ed, Mike, Stone, Jeff, and Matt and good old Boom all snapped and became devil worshipping lunatics I would love them for the band that they were when the magic happened, for the happiness that they gave me in the past, and for the music they gave me which will forever resonate in my heart from the good old days.

You see, it wouldn’t’ matter that they changed and no longer invited me into venues to play for me. I love the band now and forever unconditionally. Because the magic is real for ME. In all likelihood, I would not follow their newfound devil worshipping lunacy, and I certainly wouldn’t change my life to fit the changes they had chosen for themselves, bu the imprint on my heart would remain and any time I saw or heard about the band, my heart would skip a beat, the butterflies in my stomach would flutter, and I would be warmed with intense feelings of joy because a true love never dies.

Talia's Song Pick-o-the-week

(Not to be confused with Nixon's Pearl Jam song of the day!)

I've been listening to Beth Orton all day today and I just love her lyrics. You can listen to her on AOL Interface. My song pick o the week is from her latest album, Comfort of Strangers and has the same title:

Comfort of Strangers
I know the stars that shine on me
Are brighter than you and i may ever be
I know there’s an answer to your question
But i don’t know that i could word it right

Say what you mean don’t tell it like it could be
I’m not sure, should i just say it out loud?
Say what you mean don’t tell it like it could be
Alright this time i’m gonna keep that in mind

One love is better than not enough
I’d rather have no love
Than messing with the wrong stuff
It’s just the comfort of strangers
Always the comfort of strangers...
Yeah yeah yeah

I know the sun that shines on me
On better terms than you and i may ever be
I know there’s an answer to the question
But i’m not sure that i should word it right

Say what you mean don’t tell it like it could be
Everytime you’re gonna set me free
Say what you mean don’t tell it like it could be
Alright this time let’s take it right home to see

One love is better than not enough
I’d rather have no love
Than messing with the wrong stuff
It’s just the comfort of strangers
Always the comfort of strangers

Well some of those are like best friends
Best friends!
Ones that keep you coming round again

It's Wednesday- HUMPDAY!

First thing's first: My kooky friend Nick, known to our Jamily as Nixon has started a new daily tradition of calling me early every morning to let me know what the Pearl Jam song of the day will be. Yesterday, I failed to mention that the song of the day was In My Tree, and today, I have been notified that the song of the day is Slight of Hand. (there's your shout-out, happy now?)

Now for CMJ Stuff: It turns out that my badge is only good for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday which is somewhat of a bummer because I had to miss the shows last night (collective "awwwwww").

RUMORS: Pedro told me this morning , although he was denied admission to last night's New York premier of
Borat, he heard that 200 badges were supposed to be allowed in, but more than 400 badges showed up so they had an encore performance later on. He also said that the guy who played Borat was super tall and super baked.

As an aside: Am I the only person that doesn't get it? I don't think this guy is funny one iota! I actually feel badly for the people that he exploits because they are innocent victims who have no idea that he is spoofing them on camera (of course they sign the waiver at the end so that the footage can air on tv or the big screen). For some reason I don't mind when celebrities get punked by Ashton Kutcher because they are public figures, AND perhaps because I get to see their reactions when they find out that its all a joke, and most of the time, they are all good sports about it. I don't know, this could also stem from my severe hatred of dramatic irony (when the audience is aware of some key fact that the characters are not) and which is also the entire reason I cannot, to this day, watch Three's Company! Yeah, I know, I have no sense of humor...nevermind!

TODAY's Hot List: If my stinkin low budget badge was valid today the show I would attend would be at Bowery Ballroom, starting at 6pm tonight and featuring : Tapes 'n Tapes, Cold War Kids, Dr. Dog, Elvis Perkins, Robbers on High Street, The Bird & Bee (Inara George), What Made Milwaukee Famous. Sorry kids, this event is SOLD OUT, but if you have a badge you can show up 2 hours early and try to get in.

Also, if you missed Hellogoodbye last night, like I did, you can catch them at Rebel tonight at 7:30, and as of right now, this show is NOT sold out yet.

Remember to check out
CMJ and OhMyRockness for reviews, news, etc, as I am lame and cannot provide such for you at this point!

ROCK ON!
