LOST Season Premier TONIGHT!!

Like most LOST fanatics, I tuned in last night on ABC to re-watch last season's finale of LOST. After what seems like 6 years in waiting, the episode had me on the edge of my seat- AGAIN! Apparently, months of gorging myself on reality junkfood like Rock of Love, not only left me hungering for something substantial and nourishing to digest, but also came with the side effect of causing me to forget most of the LOST storyline! Cleverly, and somewhat annoyingly, however, the episode contained pop-up subtitle boxes at the bottom of the screen which contained snippets of backstories and reminders of who the F everyone was, and what their individual and collective dealies were. For me, since I have trouble chewing gum and walking at the same time (if I am deep in intellectual thought), I had trouble keeping up with the reading material, but it was reassuring to know that if I got confused, I had the blurbs to fall back on.

TONIGHT, my roomates and I, and millions of other people all over the world, will sit down on our couches and, although we know damn well that we will be left even more confused and frustrated than we are already, having resolved ourselves to the fact that the LOST creators will be keeping the itch that we are dying scratch just barely out of our reach until 2010 at least, we'll glue our eyes to our TVs for 2 hours (or less if you have DVR and can ff commercials) and become drunk on the spicey coctail that is LOST!

Uh, if you can't tell, my head is already exploding from the excitement!

Oh- and if you're like me and you've forgotten alot of what's going on, I've been told that the 8 min video synopsis below (I have not actually watched it myself) is a great refresher course, even if you've previously never watched the series. ENJOY!

Fired Up and Ready to Go!

Although the members of Pearl Jam have not officially come out and endorsed any particular presidential candidate, PJ drummer, Matt Cameron plays on, "Fired up and Ready to Go", a song written by Seattle's Bergevin Brothers, to spread Barack Obama's campaign message.
UPDATE: Check the comments below for a word from Joe Bergevin!

Repost from Pearljam.com:
"Written by Seattle-area musicians the Bergevin Brothers, and featuring Reverend Pat Wright and her renowned Total Experience Gospel Choir. Joe Bergevin watched Senator Barack Obama tell a story about one person, Edith Childs, who energized others with a "fired up, ready to go," chant at one of his campaign stops. Inspired by Obama's "One voice can change the world" speech, Joe wrote some lyrics and rough chords then called his brother Jon to help him compose and arrange the song. They named it after Edith's chant. After many phone calls, emails, and sleepless nights, they had assembled the team. Ten days later an epic recording was born with the intention of spreading Obama's hopeful message. Contributors include lead singer Reverend Pat Wright and her renowned Total Experience Gospel Choir, drummer Matt Cameron from Pearl Jam, lead singer Jake Bergevin, other top studio musicians, sound engineers, video teams, photographers, caterers, local news teams and a renovated theater with recording studio."

Britney Taken to Hospital

TMZ is reporting that, pursuant to a special court order, Britney Spears was taken by ambulance early this morning to UCLA Medical Center for a 3-day psychiatric evaluation. Apparently her mother came onto the scene a few days ago, and is trying to get her daughter the help she needs.

This poor girl has gone through enough, and I, for one, am hoping she can get back on track. Good luck, Brit!

Kanye has announced that he will embark on a tour this year with Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco, and N.E.R.D! That's gonna be hott!
Rolling Stone reports:

“The end of the world as you know it!!!” boasts Kanye’s blog, which also spotlights the tour’s flier. While no dates have been listed, the flier reveals the artists accompanying West: Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna and N.E.R.D., who will drop their new album N.3.R.D. in the spring. The tour will unify the three elements of rap supergroup Child Rebel Soldier, or CRS (Lupe, Kanye and N.E.R.D.’s Pharrell Williams), who early in 2007 released the Thom Yorke-sampling track “Us Placers.” Lupe has previously announced plans to release a CRS album in late 2008, so this tour will likely serve as an opportunity for the three rap superpowers to collaborate."

I MUST ATTEND SAID CONCERT! I have been looking for a reason to buy and sport some day-glo Nikes!

Paul Simon at BAM

This April, the legendary Paul Simon will be setting up shop in my neighborhood in Brooklyn for a month long residency at BAM!
"In an unprecedented month-long residency at BAM, Paul Simon collaborates with an extraordinary range of artists to offer three musical constellations from the career of one of America's greatest songwriters.Latin beats and 50s doo-wop fill New York City's nights with Songs from The Capeman. In Under African Skies, Simon rekindles a love affair with the sounds of South Africa and Brazil which began with his masterpieces Graceland and The Rhythm of the Saints. Finally, Simon revisits the quiet railway stations, urban rhythms, and immigrant dreams of his greatest American Tunes."

btw, I totally tried to find a picture of Paul Simon on SNL when Lorne Michaels made him dress up in a chicken suit! That was fantastic! If anyone can find it for me, I'll love you forever!

Gwen Stefani Pregnant!

People.com is confirming the news that Gwen and Gavin are expecting their second child! I just love it when celebrities defy the odds and actually live a happy, healthy life! Congrats to the whole adorable, rockstar family! Wouldn't it be rad if she had a baby girl and started putting red lipstick on her from birth? I'm only partially joking...

New Kids on the Block reuniting?

Real groupies are born that way, and yes, it can be inherited! One of the many things I inherited from my mother, in addition to my piercing wit, impatience for people who do anything slowly, and, of course, a pair of eyes that could set an ant on fire without a magnifying glass, I inherited the Groupie gene, and started to display the tell-tale characteristics very early on in life.

By the time I was in the 4th grade, I was totally obsessed with the New Kids on the Block! I had NKOTB curtains, bed sheets, shoe laces, and t-shirts galore! My bedroom was wall papered with Teen Bop tear out centerfolds, and my Jordan Knight poster was covered with lipgloss kisses on the back of my door! I'd listen to the tapes (yes, I said "TAPES") for hours, singing the songs as if they were written for me. They were MY band, and I was devoted to them- for eternity! Because I am not one to give up on my obsessions that easily, of COURSE I was excited when I caught wind of a juicy little rumor that the band that started me on the path to a fullfilling groupie life, would be reuniting! Dude, on the serial tip, I'd soooo be at that concert if it happened! I did get inappropriately excited a few years ago, when I saw Joey McIntyre in Wicked.....just sayin....

Great idea, TERRIBLE tag line!

I was just watching TV, and caught the end of a Tampax commercial, which actually has a really great intention, but probably the WORST tag line I have ever heard!

Without getting into details, basically Tampax has decided to donate a portion of their profits to helping young women in Africa- GREAT CAUSE, right? Right!

My beef is with the last line of the commercial- you know, the line that, in all commercials, is supposed to stick in your head, get you thinking about the product, and hopefully incite you to purchase said product next time you are...ahem....in the market for such an item.

Tampax's powerful, searing and persuasive hum-dinger is...wait for it....

"TAMPAX: USE YOUR PERIOD FOR GOOD!"

Dude. Seriously? You want me to use my what?! What fancy-suited big whig, signed the approval to that mind-blowing pitch and was actually like "Yes! I want the women of America to USE their periods! For GOOD!" I'll tell you who: a man.

Brilliant, just brilliant!

Was Eddie Vedder actually disqualified from the Oscars?

This is BS if I ever heard it! Contactmusic.com is reporting that Eddie Vedder was disqualified from an Oscar nomination for his soundtrack to Into the Wild because the music was too "song-based"! Are you kidding me? What does that even mean???

"RADIOHEAD rocker JONNY GREENWOOD and EDDIE VEDDER both missed out on a Best Score Oscar nomination for THERE WILL BE BLOOD and INTO THE WILD, because both soundtracks were ruled ineligible. Many Oscar watchers were left stunned when the rock star's movie score efforts were seemingly ignored by voters, but Oscar rules left both stars compositions out of the running. Greenwood's music for There Will Be Blood missed out because officials at the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences decided that a large part of it was not written specifically for the film, which picked up eight Oscar nominations on Tuesday (22Jan08). A proportion of the soundtrack was taken from Greenwood's Popcorn Superhet Receiver composition, which was commissioned by the BBC, and won him a British Composer Award in 2007. And Pearl Jam singer Vedder's soundtrack for Sean Penn's Into The Wild was also deemed ineligible for an Academy Award nomination - because the score is too "song-based".

Coachella East = All Points West Music and Arts Festival!

AAAAHHHHH, FESTIVAL MADNESS!!! Some people go to the beach, some people take long bike rides and watch the sunset, but for me, a concert freak, and the only Italian who is actually allergic to the sun, summer means outdoor music festivals! (and lots and lots of sunscreen!)

Well, its official: The Coachella people ARE putting on a music and arts festival on MY coast, the EAST coast, on August 8,9, and 10 at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. This festival will be called the All Points West Festival, and the lineup is still TBA but rumors are flying already that Radiohead may be playing!

Unfortunately, and rather stupidly if you ask me, All Points West is the exact same weekend as New Jersey's first annual Vineland Music Festival, which is put on by the promoters of Lollapalooza. Luckily, Chicago's darling veteran, Lollapalooza will take place on August 1-3, 2008.

I love August! EEEEEk, I can't wait for lineups to be announced.

Also, don't forget that Pearl Jam is still rumored to be headlining the Bonnaroo music and arts festival which will take place in Manchester Tennesee early in the festival season, on June 12-15.

TMZ is reporting that Heath Ledger has been found dead in his Soho apartment. He has a baby daughter, Matilda with ex Michelle Williams.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime. The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams. Oscar Nominations Announced: Vedder Snubbed.

Didn't The Academy get the memo? The winner of the Golden Globe should at least get nominated for an Oscar! That's how it usually works, no? Well, at any rate, Into the Wild, got majorly snubbed for the 80th annual Academy Awards.

Eddie didn't get nominated for the film score or for Guaranteed as best song. Emile Hirsch wasn't nominated for best actor, and Sean Penn didn't get as much as a wink.

Hal Holbrook did pick up the nomination for best supporting actor for his role as Ron Franz in Into the Wild, while Jay Cassidy did also get a nod for film editing for Into the Wild. (who?)

Why not nominate ITW for best craft services in the filming of a motion picture? Huh?

I see that Enchanted got not one but THREE nominations for best song!? Um, seriously? Not one for my boy, Eddie, but THREE for that fruity family feel good foo foo movie?! Apparently The Academy has forgotten how to appreciate good, sophisticated art. (I did not actually see Enchanted)

I am happy about all the Juno nominations including Best Actress for Ellen Page (Perhaps we are related), Best Directing, Best Picture, and Best Original Screenplay. The soundtrack for Juno has also caused quite a buzz, and features several songs from The Moldy Peaches' Kimya Dawson. On The View yesterday, Kimya said that she and Adam Green (the other moldy Peach) got selected for the soundtrack because Ellen Page thought her character, Juno, would listen to them! I thought that was pretty cool. Watch video of the Moldy Peaches performance on the view, courtesy of Stereogum.

Is Coachella coming to the East Coast?!?!

One of my fav gossip bloggers, Perez Hilton, has reported the fabulous rumor that the annual Coachella Music Festival, which normally shakes down in Indio California, may be heading East this summer:

"Sources reveal exclusively to PerezHilton.com that the Coachella Music Festival is heading east this year!
"In addition to having the festival outside of Palm Springs, like they do every year, this year they're mounting an east coast version of Coachella in New York or possibly New Jersey," an insider tells us.
The East coast version is expected to be a few months after the Cali affair. "It should be in August," we're told.
Fun times!"

As a New York music (and festival) freak, I would love love love for this to be true! Inside sources are technically remaining mum at the moment, but are giving me every reason to believe this is true! YAY!

Eddie Vedder wins a Golden Globe

(photo from the 2008 Critics Choice Awards)

Tonight, the names of each Golden Globe Award winner was read boringly and without the regular Hollywood glitz and glamor that we're used to for such an event.

On the bright side, the only Award I cared about, The award for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture, went to the best man/singer/songwriter/musician that I can think of: Mr. Eddie Vedder!

Yep, my FAV won the Golden Globe for his song, "Guaranteed", from Into the Wild.

I just love when I'm right! He is the best! Told ya!

Another one of my favorites, Johnny Depp also won for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy, for his performance in Sweeny Todd. I have not yet seen this movie, but I don't have much of an attention span for musicals, so I'm thinking this will be one I'll wait to see on dvd or on demand.

View the complete list of winners here.

Congrats Eddie!!

Celebrity Jeopardy? Hmmm...

A curious thing happened to me tonight. As I ate my energy-boosting, pre-gym snack of carrots and hummus this evening in the living room, I happened to catch the beginning of Jeopardy- a show I have never made a habit of watching on purpose. Though I was motivated enough to go to the gym after working 8 hours today, I was too lazy to retrieve the TV remote from across my tiny Brooklyn living room, so I resolved myself to enduring 10 minutes of Alex Trebek and a band of evil, unattractive geniuses who’s personal anecdote is always something super lame like “I visited 3 continents on one birthday”.

The reason I avoid watching shows like Jeopardy is the same reason I avoid trivia games and cross word puzzles- they make me feel stupid. I mean, of course I am not an idiot. I do have a fairly impressive vocabulary, and a hella phat list of academic credentials including a juris doctorate degree, but let’s be honest. I treat the sort of information that usually comprises trivia questions the way I treat the contents of my refrigerator, and even my closet: Whatever doesn’t excite me at any given moment either gets tossed into the trash or left on the curb to be gobbled up by foraging others whose lives and interests differ vastly from my own. Long story short: I never know the answers to Jeopardy questions- NEVER!

But tonight, as I crunched away on my organic peeled baby carrots, I was astonished to discover that I was mumbling the correct answers to the questions under my breath as the stereo typical nerd-contestants, struggled, stumbled, and guessed. “Holy sh*t!”, I thought. Is this what happens when you turn 28? Have I finally reached the magic age where wisdom is bestowed upon me by generous angels who have, until this point, been holding my “useless information chip” in a lock box for safe keeping? I always knew wisdom came with age because my grandparents have always had a correct answer to any important question I have ever asked them. But is 28 measly years on this planet long enough to become adequately aged for wisdom?

As this apparent fluke started to repeat itself, my excitement grew, raising me to my feet to shout each correct answer (to which I had been attaching a “mutha f*cka” and a fist pump to remind those nerds who was boss). Then, just as quickly as my newfound confidence came, it left and a less-than thrilling alternative explanation for my wisdom became glaringly obvious. I had not become smarter in the subject matter of common quiz show questions. Jeopardy had been dumbed down (for lack of a better term) to accommodate the general American viewing public who, like myself, have become more well versed in entertainment and pop culture than physics and geography.

Should I be flattered and satisfied or offended and alarmed? Am I, as a representative of the average American, forcing classical intelligence to become uncouth? Relax, readers, my answer of course is a reassuring, “NO!” My argument, I have decided, is that to be well versed in common social behavior, in modern day art and entertainment, and meticulously aware of the behavior of our popular American culture is, I contend, a skilled science to be proud of!

How did I know what breed of dog is a small, principally white-bodied, smooth or rough-coated terrier that has its origins in fox hunting? Well, duuuhh…. from the picture that accompanied the question, I immediately recognized the dog as bearing a striking resemblance to Jack Jr., Mariah Carey’s canine companion, who I know, from countless celebrity news blurbs addressing the ironic moniker the singer has given her pup, to be a Jack Russell Terrier.

If I could bring celebrity news into a canine category, imagine the damage I did to the categories entitled “TV Sitcom Families” and “Words in the titles of Harry Potter Movies”! The result of my discovery tonight is reassuring indeed. Not only have I realized that my devotion to gossip and pop culture does actually bestow upon me a wide range of practical and useful information, but I’ve also become conscious of the fact that such subject matter is actually becoming an accepted and trivia-worthy body of knowledge to have a grasp on.

Yes, America, I am intelligent enough to watch Jeopardy, so read those gossip rags, flip on Access Hollywood, and take notes, and soon you will be too!

Here it is: Eddie Vedder's Video for Guaranteed

There is no question that "Guaranteed" is a beautiful song, and a thoughful compliment to the Into the Wild storyline. This music video, in my opinion, draws on the same inner dialogue presence as Eddie's soundtrack vocals did throughout the movie, by portraying images of Eddie's shaddowy presence behind images of Emile Hirsch as Chris McCandless.
Nice job, Eddie! Thanks for the birthday present :)

Barack Obama wins in Iowa Caucus

The results of yesterday's Iowa Caucuses are in, and Barack Obama has won for the Democrats. Mike Huckabee won on the Republican side.

As I enter my 10th year as a voting American, I can say that, for the first time, I truly believe in, and trust a presidential candidate- That man is Barack Obama. Issues aside, (and I do agree with almost everything in Obama's plan) I believe in him as a leader, rather than a "politician" and as a real life human being. I trust and believe Obama more than I have any other political figure in my adult life. I recognize him as a true representative of modern day America, and an honest man who is legitimately dissatisfied and afraid of the state of our country and our world today, and who, based on that sentiment, will actually carry out his hardest efforts toward a real and substantial, life-altering change for me, and the rest of America. A change that will have lasting and real impact on the world as a whole.

I like you, Barack Obama. I like you alot. As a fanatical tree hugger, as an opponent of American troops in Iraq, as a neurotic scardy cat, and as an American who desperately wants to see something other than apocalypse in my future- I stand by you, ma man!

Eddie Vedder's solo video for Guaranteed premiers on January 7th!

Yay, the moment we have all been waiting for has arrived: Eddie Vedder's first solo video for the song "Guaranteed", will premier on January 7th on VH1 and VH1.com. Umm, thats MY BIRTHDAY, by the way!! Thank you, thank you!! What a wonderful birthday present! :)

Reposted Announcement from PearlJam.com:

ED VEDDER RELEASES MUSIC VIDEO
01.03.08
Singer/songwriter Eddie Vedder appears for the first time as a solo artist in a music video for the Critics Choice-, Golden Globe- and Grammy-nominated song "Guaranteed" from the Sean Penn-directed motion picture Into the Wild.

The video, directed by critically-acclaimed writer/director Marc Rocco (Murder in the First and Where the Day Takes You) premieres January 7th at 6:00 a.m. EST on VH1 and VH1.com. Video repeats will air throughout the morning hours and online leading up to VH1's live telecast of the 13th Annual Critics Choice Awards at 9:00 p.m. EST.

Feature film writer/director Marc Rocco conceived, directed and produced the video for "Guaranteed" in just a few days - and shot the project entirely on 35 mm film in three hours - as a way for the typically video-shy Vedder to pay tribute to Sean Penn's film and Chris McCandless's journey. The video uses a series of floating, illuminated images from Into the Wild to capture Vedder's intimate and poetic performance, weaving striking silhouettes of Vedder with translit still frames from the film in a powerful and simple way.

"To me, Eddie is the most compelling musical artist of our generation," explains Rocco. "His songwriting pounds you on a visceral level and his storytelling always stands apart in the same way a great film does - each time you hear his words, they engender a different experience in your heart, soul and mind."
"It has been a privilege and honor to collaborate with Eddie in a medium that he so rarely visits. I hope that I've portrayed visually the song 'Guaranteed' in a way that leaves the viewer as emotionally moved as I was the first time I heard Eddie's music for Into the Wild."

A Guitar Hero III Review to start off the new year!

Happy New Year everyone! I know I have been notably absent from the blogosphere as of late, and I attribute it partly to after effects of my no gossip challenge, but mostly to sheer holiday laziness.

But, I'm back now, so your life is once again complete :)

I hope you all got what you wanted for Christmas and stayed out of the emergency room on New Year's eve! To start you off properly, I share with you this hilarious video review of Guitar Hero 3 by a salty British born, Australian based writer/ gamer who goes by the moniker "Yahtzee". Notice how frequently he reminds us that he is NOT gay. Overcompensate much? Oh, Yahtzee, I love you anyway. I am a sucker for a salty Brit! Enjoy
