Save Philly's 10Club at 10!!

This is a re-post from friend of mine. He knows and listens to Matt Cord on Philly's WMMR, and shared this news with me, and other Pearl Jam fans on the message board last night. I sent an email to the program manager. Do so if you share our concern.

As many of you know there is a DJ in Philly named Matt Cord he is a die hard Pearl Jam fan. Matt has been bringing us the 10 club at 10 pm EST Monday- Friday for at least three years on WMMR radio in Philly. For those of you who are not familiar with what it is, its a 3-4 song block of Pearl Jam. Matt plays a little bit of everything be it a hit, a live track, and many rarities. So I called Matt tonight to request out of my mind for the 10 club. He told me some really bad news the program director has decided that its time to put an end to the 10 club at 10 pm EST at www.wmmr.com. This is really upsetting to me I know that many of you on this board listen or have listened for some time to Matt spinning Pearl Jam on the 10 club. I actually found out about his show from this board and have made many friends on here because of Matt's show. Now here's where you can help. Please drop the program director an email to let him know how much we enjoy Matt and WMMR bringing us the 10 club on a nightly basis. I am hoping if enough of us email him we can stop this from happening. Here is his email address ProgramDirector@WMMR.com. His name is Mr. Bill Weston. Let's get behind this guys!!! Dear Mr. Weston,
I have received news that your station will be canceling Matt Cord's daily Pearl Jam block, known as the 10Club at 10. I ask that you please reconsider this programming decision, as it has upset more than your local listeners, but Pearl Jam fans across the country, and no doubt the world- wherever the gracious reach of the Internet extends. I myself, avail myself in New York City of the nightly Pearl Jam block via WMMR.com.

You see, Mr. Weston, among war, poverty, famine and natural disaster, there are still a few things that people take solace and great pleasure in, and one of those things happens to be music. For many, this simple block of music provides a positive end to a hectic day, a much needed release from the stress of family and work, and whatever else pains us. Sure, most of your listeners could easily play the same songs from their personal collections at home, but sharing the experience across the airwaves each night is comforting and provides a sense of camaraderie for us that is unfortunately lacking in so many aspects of every day life.

Yes, the position that I intend to impress upon you comes with some bias because I am a devout Pearl Jam fan myself. I ask that you simply consider how it was that I received news of this unfortunate cancellation. I received a phone call in New York, about your Philadelphia area radio station, from a good friend in Detroit. In the time it takes you to click "open" on this email 3 states of Pearl Jam fans have united in this cause. If you take a look at the official Pearl Jam message board, you'll see aggrieved responses from representatives in several additional states, expressing dissatisfaction and disappointment at your decision.

What may have seemed like a simple restructuring of your programming has caused a far greater stir than, I assume, you would have predicted. Please do not cancel the 10club at 10, and break one of the few remaining ties that still bind people across the country. I doubt that was ever your intention.

Pearl Jam play Beacon Theater for Charity

You may have already noticed this about me, but I'll go ahead and admit that I often refrain from blogging about events/ shows, etc. that I cannot attend because it breaks my heart to even think about them. If you'll notice, I blogged very little about the Eddie Vedder solo tour for this very reason. Anyway, I'm gonna tell you now about a small charity show in NY, that I cannot attend, though it makes me ill to even think about. *sniffle*

Pearl Jam, revered philathropists, will be playing another charity show, this time to benefit The Robinhood Foundation, on July 1st at New York's Beacon Theater. After a $100 donation to the foundation, which "targets poverty in New York City by finding and funding the best and most effective programs and partnering with them to mazimize results", donors are able to purchase a maximum of 6 tickets to the show for $250 each. I'm sure this will be an amazing show, and for a good cause, but I can't swing that kind of dough- not at this stage in my life, and certainly not after Bonnaroo and 7 additional Pearl Jam shows (I just added the Hartford, CT show to my roster). Those who are able to attend will be recipients of my whole hearted envy on July 1st.

Ok, thats the last you'll hear from me about this show. I must go dry my eyes...

Eddie in Bad Radio

Once upon a time, before the seeds of Pearl Jam were planted, young Eddie Vedder was the front man for a band called Bad Radio. A friendly fan just passed this vid along to me of a fresh faced Ed belting out his un-tarnished vocals to Believe You Me with Bad Radio. Sounds like this was well before the cigarettes and wine took their toll on the old wind pipes!

Step Brothers: The answer to my prayers!

Last night I finally watched Walk Hard, starring John C. Reilly, and also featuring a super fantastic cameo by Eddie Vedder (I watched that part 3 times), and I must say that I very much enjoyed the film as a whole! I really like John C. Reilly, and I found myself likening him to my favorite cuddly funny man Will Ferrell. I actually said "ya, know those two could totally be brothers!"

So this morning, I get to work, and I opened IMDB to do some work-related research, and right there, on the front page, there was a trailer for a movie called Step Brothers, starring none other than Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly! The movie comes out July 25th, and this is the first I've heard of it. I watched the trailer, and laughed so hard I watched it 3 more times! I cannot wait for this movie to come out. If you don't think the trailer is funny, there is something seriously wrong with you! (ok, that was harsh, but what I'm trying to say is that I REALLY dig this sort of humor, and these dudes tickle me beyond comprehension!)

Day Off!

I used to envy people who worked 4-day weeks, and had Fridays off. "Oh, what I could get done if only I had an extra day to my weekend!", I would tell myself. This week, I was given the opportunity to give it a try, and I'm ashamed to say, that I cannot handle it.

First of all, we all know how addicted to the gym I have become. Its gotten to the point that I feel not only guilty but depressed if I don't work out at least 4 or 5 times a week. Well, if you're working 10-hour days, fitting in an adequate workout is doable, yet difficult. First I tried going in the morning. I have taught myself in the past month to get up at 6am to go to the gym, but I had no idea that working late the same day would make me so miserable. It did. Ok, I'll just come in SUPER early, and go after work. (PS, that ends up getting me out of bed at the same time in the morning, so no real difference). I tried it. It sucked. Yesterday, I skipped the gym altogether, and felt miserable having done so.

Friday! Oh Friday! I'll do everything on Friday! Pssshhhh. I DID get up early this morning, eat cereal on the couch, and watch the episodes of LOST and SNL from last week that I had missed due to other things going on. All throughout LOST and halfway throughout SNL I had every intention of getting up as soon as they were over, cleaning the apartment, going to the gym, trying out that new vacuum cleaner I got recently.....and then the time came to get off the couch and I found that I had, at some point unknown to me, become attached to the cushions. Not literally, of course, but I had succumbed to laziness. Even though I can tell it is a beautiful day outside, the fatigue I've accumulated throughout the week- pushing myself to the limit to fit in all my workouts and get in 40 hours in 4 days, has crippled me.

This fact concerns me greatly. There are loads of things that I actually want to be doing. I have deadlines looming, things that I need to research and write, a podcast to prepare for (details to follow), and yet here I am, eyes glued to TLC- to shows that I don't even like that much! Seriously, What Not to Wear is not a good show, and yet I'm watching these fake fools play dress up with a schmuck from LA who claims to wear scrubs on dates. Really? REALLY?

The conversations that I'm having with myself today, half in my head and half aloud, are just as disturbing.
"Ok, next commercial break, I'll pee, then fill up my water glass...I don't drink as much water when I'm not at work. It's funny cuz I always pee at work around 11:00...." "Do I want peanut butter and jelly or turkey for lunch? I should have turkey. Peanut butter doesn't go bad. After Little People Big World, I'm going to make a turkey sandwich. I wonder if the short brother would be as cute as the tall brother if he wasn't a little person. That's terrible! I am the reason why those people suffer so much. I hate myself. I should have two sandwiches."

Yeah, I suck. A day off and I've nearly blown it. I think the only thing that could salvage this day is to go back to bed, sleep a bit more, then wake up again and start fresh. DON'T JUDGE ME!

Giant Telescope from Brooklyn to London

I cannot fully comprehend this situation, but apparently after over 100 years of construction, a giant trans-atlantic telescope has been completed which allows someone to stand in Brooklyn, and look directly inside the giant lens to people in London....and WAVE! You know those periscope things that let you look around the corner with mirrors? I'm thinking its something like that maybe? (If that was a really stupid comment, I apologize! We creative types don't tend to understand the sciences.) *UPDATE: I am not the best investigative journalist! I posted the link to the full article on this "exhibit" and only skimmed it myself. Had I read further I would have discovered BEFORE trekking out to DUMBO to see the thing in person, that its just an art exhibit. Yeah, you can see London in real time, alright. But its obviously just cameras. I was super disappointed, because I honestly wanted to believe this was possible. I guess it's pretty cool nonetheless. I did witness a British family (half on the Brooklyn side, half on the London side) on the phone and waving to each other. Yes, I am quite gullible :(

The Telectroscope will be on display and open to the public 24 hours a day in London and New York until June 15. Artichoke is arranging requests to synchronize special reunions between friends and family or, the company hopes, maybe even a marriage proposal.

2008 Bonnaroo Schedule is up!

Well I've been waiting for this schedule to be released since I bought my ticket for "Roo, and now that I've got it, I'm more excited than ever. It finally feels real to me. I can already feel the mud caking under my toenails!

If I thought that I might be getting a semi-reasonable amount of sleep in order to adequately replenish my energy before each action-packed day, I was vastly mistaken! This monster schedule has bands playing from noon till 4am! Oooowww! NO really, Ouch!

My Morning Jacket (a MUST for me) is slated to play Friday 6/13 from midnight-3am. [please note that my normal bed time is between 10:30 and 11:00PM] As anticipated, Pearl Jam will be playing the Saturday Night slot from 10:15PM-12:15AM, BUT Kanye is playing directly before PJ on ANOTHER STAGE, AND, Lupe is playing AFTER PJ starting at 1:15AM. *breathe*

With other high-energy performers such as Gogol Bordello and Against Me! playing during the day on Saturday, all I can do is take my vitamins, drink water, and rally! By Sunday, the excitement is mostly over, with nothing major blowing my skirt up...eh Death Cab's ok, and Broken Social Scene appears to be playing twice...can that be right? I'll still be recovering from Saturday's insanity. Bring it, 'Roo-sters :)

Hangovers: I am normal.

After spending the entire weekend celebrating the fact that one of my oldest and dearest friends will soon be married to the love of her life (aka, a bachelorette party) I found myself dehydrated, nauseous, trembling, and just simply ill yesterday. Whenever this happens to me, I generally convince myself that I am, in fact, dying at which point panic ensues, and I inevitably call my mother to inform her that she will soon become childless. The story ends with me eventually falling asleep, despite my irrational fears, Monday actually does come shortly thereafter with me around to witness it, and I feel ashamed for wimpering and whining my entire Sunday away. Rinse. Repeat.

Anyway, I was very intrigued to read a timely article (at least for me) in The New Yorker titled, "A Few Too Many: Is there any hope for the hangover?" Its quite a lengthy article but if you've ever suffered from the dreaded morning after feeling, you might discover the contents insightful...or amusing...or both. This is the excerpt that caught my attention

“When that ineffable compound of depression, sadness (these two are not the same), anxiety, self-hatred, sense of failure and fear for the future begins to steal over you, start telling yourself that what you have is a hangover. . . . You have not suffered a minor brain lesion, you are not all that bad at your job, your family and friends are not leagued in a conspiracy of barely maintained silence about what a shit you are, you have not come at last to see life as it really is.”

New Kids rock the plaza!

So I got up this morning at 4:45AM, and trekked through the chilly May rain to Rockefeller Plaza to join the throngs of screaming women eagerly awaiting a reunion concert by The New Kids on the Block! I arrived just after 6:00AM (I had to stop at the store to buy materials to make a "Happy Birthday Jordan" sign because his 38th is tomorrow), and found that the only people allowed into the blocked off area were those who had arrived on the scene 24-48 hours in advance! People had set up tents, and were actually camping out for days to see this show- their first live performance together in 15 years! So, I strolled into Dean & Deluca, grabbed a coffee and muffin, and watched the sound check through the window. About an hour later, I ventured outside and found my way behind the stage, perched myself on top of a barricade and watched the set (it would be an exaggeration to say that I "heard" the set), which included snippets from "Hangin Tough", "Please Don't Go Girl", and "Tonight".

I saw/ heard (sorta) enough to be super excited for the upcoming NKOTB tour, which finds the fellas, who are all still super hot by the way, playing the Izod Center in New Jersey both tomorrow and again on September 23. I'll be there for the fall show.

I'll also eventually post the pictures taken by one of the girls I was with this morning. She had an awesome camera, whereas mine reeks of suckitude.

The only downfall to getting up at 4:45 this morning to see NKOTB is that I am equal parts ravenous and exhausted. Yeah, it was worth it!

June = Crazy Time!

My favorite part about summer are all the concerts I get to see every year. New York is awesome enough to have loads and loads of shows from great bands for free (or close to it) all summer long at places like Prospect Park, Battery Park, Central Park Summerstage, South Street Seaport, and McCarren Pool. Those shows are 1-offs for me, and I'll hit em up as I see fit. But for right now, I have my plate full with confirmed shows that I will 100% be attending, and the lineup is enough to make my head explo- yep, it just did!

So, here's a lil taste of what I've got cookin in June alone. Don't hate me cuz I'm awesome :)

Rare early footage of Pearl Jam

When I got to work this morning and checked my email I had a delightful little treat waiting for me- a YouTube clip of a very young Pearl Jam jamming out to Baba O'riley in a room somewhere in, I would presume, the early 90s. Its hot- no, its smokin hot, and gorgeous, and spectacular, and...ok its Monday and I'm easily excitable. Watch my boyfriend, with the chubby cheeks of a child give his trademark "crazy eyes"! *sigh* Happy Monday!


PS. If anyone knows anything more about this clip, PLEASE share! Where are they? What year is it? Why have I not seen this footage until now??

Brit's return to HIMYM!

Although it wasn't Emmy material, Britney Spears' debut on How I Met Your Mother not too long ago was well received nonetheless. So much so that, despite indication from Neil Patrick Harris that her appearance on the show was a sham casting for ratings, Brit will soon be reprising her role. Ok! Magazine reports:

Pearl Jam confirm they're working on 9th Studio Album!

I knew it! First Jeff hinted at it a few months back and now Mike is confirming that Pearl Jam has been in the studio getting ready for album #9! Woo Hoo! I Can't Wait.

"Pearl Jam have begun work on early demos for their ninth studio album ­— which will be their first with producer Brendan O’Brien since 1998’s Yield, according to guitarist Mike McCready. “It’s really in its infant stages right now,” McCready tells Rolling Stone. “We have about five ideas that have been worked on.” The band, whose last album was 2006’s well-received Pearl Jam, isn’t sure yet about the direction of the new release. “Brendan is another set of ears that we respect, and he’s going to give us a different way to go but I don’t know what that is yet,” McCready says. The band has already had one session with O’Brien, and will probably resume work on the album in July after finishing their June U.S. tour.

Meanwhile, McCready is continuing his charity work for his cause of choice: raising awareness about Crohn’s disease, the digestive ailment he’s suffered from since he was 21. He’s leading a May 3rd benefit concert at the Seattle club Showbox at the Market, raising money for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. McCready will perform twice,­ first with Rick and Chris Friel from his pre-Pearl Jam band Shadow, and then with Flight toMars, his tribute band to British rockers UFO (the band’s guitarist, Michael Schenker, was a big influence). During the Shadow set, McCready expects his old friend Duff McKagan to jump on stage. “He wants to sing [the Stooges‘] ‘IWannna Be Your Dog,’” McCready says. “I’m just stoked he wanted to be part of it.”
