What's in a name?

I was intrigued a few years ago by a chapter in a great book I read called Freakonomics, by Steven D. Levitt, which explored the correlation between a person's name, and the type of life he or she leads. The author studied people with very strange names, such as a teenage girl named Temptress who was brought to juvenile court on prostitution charges. Was she trickin because she was named "Temptress" or was she named "Temptress" because her environment was one that would lead to trickin? Interesting stuff.

Anyway, I just read this article on Yahoo about strange names and it reminded me of Freakonomics...

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.

Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.
"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.
In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.

Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.

New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.

Dude, I'm TOTALLY gonna name my first born, "Yeah Detroit!" I'm adding the exclamation point for pizzazz!

Bob Lefsetz's Review of Pearl Jam at VH1 Rock Honors

Bob Lefsetz is a pretty well respected music critic (I guess) who has, on occasion, posted not-so-flattering words about Pearl Jam on his blog. With regard to Pearl Jam, he's been known to make the same generic "They're still around?" jokes which has obviously left me with a somewhat biased ill will toward his opinons in general. Anyway, when I saw that he had reviewed the 2008 VH1 Rock Honors performances, I was worried that I'd have more reasons to doubt the foundation on which he bases his musical expertise. I was, however, shocked that after ragging on everyone including Roger Daltry, Lefsetz gave Pearl Jam a glowing review! It seemed that against all odds, he actually put his snotty aires behind him, REALLY paid attention to the performance and GOT IT! Like, seriously, he seems to have totally tapped into the reality thet I have been trying to get across to the masses.

All I can say to Mr. Lefsetz is: Duh. Took you long enough! Don't YOU feel like a heel?

"...Actually, Pearl Jam was on first, before Adam. And there’s something that bugs me about Eddie Vedder. He takes himself too seriously and I would like a little sweetness in his voice.
Speaking of serious, they opened with a seemingly endless take of "Love Reign O’er Me". Great track, but the evening demanded more energy.
Then they tore into "The Real Me". It was a REVELATION! I’m tingling just WRITING ABOUT IT!

Rock and roll is something that can’t be quantified, sometimes it’s not even something you hear, but FEEL!

And speaking of mesmerizing… Jeff Ament is positively channeling John Entwistle. His fingers are dancing all over his bass. He’s moving just a bit more than the Ox, but he’s still in his own world, not just pinning down the bottom, but creating a WHOLE WORLD down there!
As for Mike McCready, he’s doing a modern day Townshend. So possessed by the music that it’s taken over his whole body, he’s jumping, he’s splitting. You know how you dance around your bedroom? When no one’s watching, when you feel the music completely? THAT’S MIKE! But he’s getting every sound exactly right.

That’s what my first shrink told my parents. That all I wanted to do was stay home and listen to records. But at least I wanted to do SOMETHING!
Can you see the real me?

The real me is someone who’s never sold out, who’s followed the music, to here. Been a rough ride, but I had no other choice.

A real musician has no other choice. The stardom is secondary, as is the bread. You do it because you have to. You only feel good when you’re playing. It’s what your life is about. And when you get to do your act, the audience can feel it, your dedication, your PASSION!

Pearl Jam is not really playing for the audience, they’re playing for THEMSELVES! Your goal is to get closer, you want some of what they’ve got, that energy, that FEELING!
Now I know why Pearl Jam sells out arenas long after their last "hit". People who go know. That they can only get this feeling at their show. Sure, there are some other acts that deliver. But very few. And most of them are old, from an era when music still mattered, they’re running on fumes.

But Pearl Jam is not running on fumes. Watching this, you’d think they’re the most vital band in the land. You’d believe there’s still hope for rock and roll."

An Inappropriate Conversation about Muppets

Today a somewhat insane train of thought crept into my brain. A co-worker described her friend's boyfriend as resembling a muppet. I took this comment more seriously than it was intended, obviously, because I started to think about what it might be like to actually date a muppet. Kermit would give me a fat complex fer sher! I mean, just look at those arms! I need a man thats bigger than me.

Then I thought: Hey Rowlf is certainly a much preferable option! I mean, he's cute and cuddly and musically inclined! He's even hairier than me (also a pre-requisite)! And now that I think about it, he was one of the more pleasant characters among the muppets, and come to think of it, he sorta reminds me of Jim James from My Morning Jacket. So I took a chance and posed the ridiculous issue to my friend, Yael, who just happens to be in love with Jim James. The following IM conversation ensued:

talia: ok so a co-worker was telling me that her friend's boyfriend looks like a jim hensen character...

Yael: OH MAN

talia: and I was like "is it at least a cute one?"

Yael: THIS IS GOING TO BE GOOD

talia: and then I said: "Kermit would give me a fat complex but Rowlf is actually pretty hot"

talia: he plays music (piano)

Yael: rowlf is awesome

talia: he's fun, hairy- a real guy's guy

Yael: agreed!!!!

talia: so then I thought, maybe Jim James reminds me of Rowlf a bit

Yael: awwwwwwww

Yael: that is awesome

talia: hairy and musically inclined and cute

Yael: hmmm, i have to think about this one for a minute

Yael: oh man. rowlf doesnt have enough hair

talia: what do you mean?! he is ALL hair!

Yael: but not shagggy!!!!!

talia: yeah, kinda

talia: Rowlf is totally hot!

talia: I would sooo date Rowlf

Yael: ugh... me too for sure

Yael: yes.. no question

talia: there is something seriously wrong with us, by the way

Yael: so? hes nice... and kind...and musical...and attractive

talia: haha. hilarious. you dont need to convince me that Rowlf is a suitable mate

talia: I do fear that "others" might find us to be a little off our rockers!

talia: I feel like he was always pretty level headed too

talia: like whenever there was a crisis he'd just figure out a way to use music to fix everything

talia: ya know, I just MIGHT be in love with Rowlf!

Yael: im a little serious though

talia: Im totally serious! thats whats so funny!

Yael: i mean as serious as i could be about being in love with a muppet

talia: hahhaha I know! believe me, I get it!

talia: as far as musican muppets go, I would take Rowlf over Animal. Animal seems irresponsible

talia: not a very good communicator

Yael: you know, i would say that except

talia: I couldn't bring him home to my family

Yael: patrick hallahan (of My Morning Jacket) is Animal. they even call him Animal

talia: ohhh right

Yael: and patrick is a major part of that band so, i am inclined to think differently about Animal

talia: Ok, you can date Animal.

Last night I tuned in to watch the 2008 VH1 Rock Honors Tribute to The Who from my couch at home. From the very beginning, during the montage of various celebrities talking candidly about The Who, I found that every time Eddie Vedder appeared on screen, I would inadvertently yelp! That's not normal! Its like I've never seen the man appear on TV before!

First let me interject and say that ALL of last night's performances were great! Foo Fighters rocked the stage, Incubus impressed me, and when Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips crowd surfed in a giant bubble, I knew the Lips were gonna mystify me- and they did. Luckily The Who has created an incredible body of work for great musicians to play!

Ok, so when Sean Penn came out to introduce Pearl Jam, I felt myself become extremely anxious and jittery. So much, that I had to get up from the couch and kneel in front of the TV! Then, just before they came out, I felt like a nervous parent waiting for their 3-year-old to step onto stage in a ballet recital- overprotective and overwhelmed with love and pride. I felt totally exposed like I was showing the TV audience a part of me that I normally reserve for friends and family. The world was going to see MY Pearl Jam perform and what were they going to say???

As the keyboardist (NOT Boom!) began "Love Reign O'er Me", my emotions reached a peak and tears ran down my face. Ed started to sing, the band started to play, and I experienced a pride that was unmistakable! They were amazing! They were on top of their game! They had the energy and polish of a band that has been playing together their entire lives. They were professionals, and they were everything I knew they could be. I'm SURE Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend were proud! Pearl Jam followed with "The Real Me" which they executed just as beautifully as the first song. Mike shook his little booty and hammed it up as only Mike knows how! Stone looked like he was truly enjoying himself, and Jeff and Matt played their hearts out. Mike even finished like a rock star by smashing his guitar on stage! The performance left me satisfied that the world had seen the best of Pearl Jam's abilities, and I felt even more justified in my undying love for a band that means more to me than any band should ever mean to any random music fan in the world.

The Who's performance was inspiring too, of course. After all these years Roger and Pete still have all the stamina and talent that they had when they were young! When Pearl Jam reaches the point in their career that they start to be honored in this way (and I have every confidence that they will), I'll be old as hell, but you better believe I'll be in that audience, sharing just a small piece of the glory!

I think Olivia Vedder looks the spitting image of her gorgeous father, sitting here on her mother's lap at the 2008 VH1 rock honors, don't you?

Lilsugar featured the little Vedder's photo today in a "guess the celebrity kid" quiz. For me, it was a no-brainer!

Billy Joel's (almost) Last Show at Shea Stadium!

Last night I found out at roughly 5pm, that I would be attending the Billy Joel concert at Shea Stadium that was supposed to be the last concert to be played there before the old ball park was torn down for good (The Beatles were the very first concert to play at Shea Stadium back in 1965). Due to popular demand, however, there was an additional show added for tomorrow night so last night's concert was only the 2nd to last concert ever to be played at Shea. Anyway, it was amazing! I had floor (well, field) seats just to the right of the stage for a nearly 4 hour concert that was jam-packed with Beatles covers and special guests including Tony Bennett, John Mayer, John Mellencamp, and Don Henley! I was tipped off about the special guests in advance by an enthusiastic stadium employee serving ice cream at the Carvel stand (he was present at rehearsals presumably) and he said tomorrow's for REAL last show will include an appearance by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr!

Despite the throngs of over-tanned, over bleached long island house wives who had been sipping a few too many of the liquored up "iced teas" that go by the same name, I had such a fantastic time! Billy's vocals and piano playing were music to my ears and somehow covered the otherwise intolerable sound of the drunk chick behind me who never seemed to grasp the fact that the Mets were not, in fact, playing a game at Shea last night, shouting "Lets go Me-ets! (clap clap clap clap clap)" for a solid 3 and a half hours!

So, because I was unprepared to attend a concert last night, the only pics I have are from my less than spectacular cell phone cam, and from a friend who had a bird's eye view of the entire scene. If you have an opportunity to get a ticket for tomorrow night's show, I highly recommend attending!

Barack Obama appeared on Larry King Live to formally address the controversial cover of The New Yorker which depicted he and his wife, Michelle, in a less than favorable light. Always the cool cucumber, he shruggs it off as "just a cartoon". Duh. Move on people!

BEFORE I thought of myself as Talia Trolley Page-Vedder, and AFTER my brief reign as Talia Trolley Page-Knight, I was a very smitten Talia Trolley Page-Sabato Jr! When Jagger Cates arrived in Port Charles in 1992 (I'm talking General Hospital talk here) my 12-year-old eyes had no idea how to handle those dimples. It was love at first sight, and I vowed to always be true (and to hate Virginia Madsen, who eventually bore his offspring- hoe!) When Jagger left GH for greener pastures (aka bad Lifetime movies) I had already moved on to rock stars exclusively, but Antonio Sabato, Jr. will forever hold a piece of my adolescent heart!

So last night, my aorta went into flutter overdrive when I saw a commercial on SoapNet advertising new episodes the GH spinoff, Night Shift , which will begin airing on July 22nd, featuring none other than the ORIGINAL Jagger Cates! Aaaahhhhh!

I fully expect Antonio to woo me in all the old familiar places....on the docks, at Kelly's, at the nurse's station! July 22 cannot come soon enough!

One rock fan thought he was dreaming last week when he got into a cab and found an iPhone filled with pictures of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, his girlfriend, Jill McCormick, and their family. "Suddenly, the phone started ringing," says a source. "The caller ID said 'Eddie.'" After chatting with the rocker himself, the fan dropped off McCormick's phone at Vedder's midtown hotel. Vedder was appreciative, handing the do-gooder an envelope with a note of gratitude, one of his engraved Zippo lighters and $500.

Eddie Vedder will embark on a month-long solo tour beginning August 1st in Boston and ending August 22nd in Chicago with select dates in Canada (full list of tour dates below).

Tickets for the general public will go on sale on Friday, July 11, 2008 through Ticketmaster.com or at Ticketmaster outlets.

The base ticket price for all shows is $75 USD plus additional venue, service and handling fees. There is a four-ticket limit for the public on sale.

A special, limited ticket pre-sale for current active members of the Ten Club will begin at 10am PDT on July 7, 2008 and run through 5pm PDT on July 9, 2008 or while supplies last. Ten Club tickets are very limited and will sell out quickly. Your cooperation is appreciated. You must be an active fan club member as of July 1, 2008 to qualify for the ticket pre-sale. Ten Club tickets may be purchased online at pearljam.com with Visa or Mastercard only. There is a two-ticket limit per member for the Ten Club pre-sale. All ticket sales are final. Pearl Jam packed arena-sized power into New York's 2,800-capacity Beacon Theater last night (July 1), rattling off an eclectic 26-song set list during a private show that raised $3 million for the Robin Hood Foundation's poverty fighting initiatives.

Frontman Eddie Vedder told the crowd, some of whom had paid $2,250 for floor-level seats, that he required a steroid shot in his posterior to get him stage-ready for the evening, the last show of a mini-U.S. tour for the Seattle band. Pearl Jam had played a two-and-a-half hour set the night before in Boston.

As such, the group eased its way into the show, playing seated for the first five songs, which included such obscurities as "Lowlight" and "Sleight of Hand" alongside covers of Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" and Bob Dylan's "Masters of War."The band then shifted into its normal set, which went heavy on some of its more classic-sounding repertoire like the Motown-inspired rave-up "All Night," the sing-a-long "Marker in the Sand" and "Down," which showcased lead guitarist Mike McCready's blues-drenched leads.

Vedder was not shy about getting political, bashing the current Presidential administration's continued funding of the Iraq War and reminding the audience that the next time Pearl Jam returned to the New York area that there would be a new leader in the White House.

But the focus remained on the music, with the band offering a slew of crowd favorites such as "Wishlist," "Why Go," "Do the Evolution," "Black," "Crazy Mary," "Alive" and a thunderous, show-closing cover of the Who's "Baba O'Riley."

Pearl Jam will now transition into work on its next studio album, which will be produced by longtime collaborator Brendan O'Brien. Vedder is also expected to embark on an East Coast leg of his solo tour in August, showcasing material from his soundtrack to the film "Into the Wild" alongside deep Pearl Jam tracks and covers.

Repo: The Genetic Opera

Ummmm....

So you may have heard about this "musical" that Paris Hilton made with Sarah Brightman and Paul Sorvino (two legitimate artists), called Repo: The Genetic Opera. The trailer has hit the internet, and I must say it looks pretty crazy pants! Has it even been officially declared that Hilton can sing? I can hardly even recognize her in that getup. The trailer is enough- can you imagine sitting through over an hour of this crap? I'm probably NOT gonna rush out to see this bad boy, but if you are so inclined, be my guest! Just tell me what you think of it, k?

Free Bon Jovi Concert at Central Park

Bon Jovi has announced a FREE (yet ticketed) concert at Central Park's Great Lawn on July 12th in conjunction with the 2008 MLB All Star Game at Yankee Stadium.

Here's the catch: Major League Baseball will start handing out tickets at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, and KeySpan Park in Brooklyn. Oy! Sounds like it will be a bit of a mess, but good luck if you plan on trying!

Tonight Pearl Jam will play a concert to benefit The Robinhood Foundation at the Beacon Theater in New York City. Proceeds from the tickets, which cost fans $250 on top of a $100 initial minimum donation will go toward fighting homelessness in New York City.

I'm tapped from my tour (see below) so despite the fact that the money goes toward a great cause, I'll be sitting this one out :( It's sure to be a great show.
