AOL's Guide to Concert Etiquette

Its summertime and that means tons of bands are on tour and your ass is hitting every show to pass through your town from Bjork to Poison. Party on, I say, but AOL wants to remind us that there is a certain etiquette that we, as concertgoers, should follow in order to make seeing a live music show as pleasant as possible for everyone involved. As usual, I have added my own AccordingToTalia 2 cents, in purple, for each of the 10 items on the list. The Spinner Staff at AOL has put together a vignette demonstrating each rule, and I've included one of the funnier ones below for your viewing enjoyment. Have fun this summer, but don't ruin it for me!

10. Tall dudes: choose a spot and stay put. Being of relatively short stature, at a whopping 5 feet 4 inches, I find myself standing on tippy toes for the duration of a general admission show. I understand that the world is full of people that are taller than me, but do you always have to stand so close to the stage? If you were to stand behind me, we'd both be able to see, and I wouldn't be killing you with my mind for over an hour during the set. Just be courteous, that's all I ask, mmmm-kay?
9. We get it, you're a fan, you don't need to wear a fricken t-shirt. I am torn about this one. I definitely have rules about not wearing a band t-shirt unless you've seen the band live, or at the very least, own an album and know multiple songs. I HATE it when young people wear Grateful Dead shirts because they want people to think they smoke pot, or wear a Rolling Stones shirt because they saw Jessica Simpson wearing one in US Weekly. On the other hand, whenever I see someone on the street with a Pearl Jam shirt on, I immediately respect them. PLUS, if you buy a shirt at the show, which we all know, is where you find the best band merch, and don't feel like carrying it around, what better way to keep it safe than by putting it on? I say this rule is totally breakable, so go ahead.
8. Your tongue belongs in your own mouth. Ok, this one is important. PDA is totally unacceptable at a concert. I'm sorry, but if you wanted to play kissy face, you could have saved yourself $100 and made out to the album in the car! Besides, you are running serious risk of injury by making out at a concert. You could get elbowed in the head, knocked to the ground, trampled, and not to mention all the things that might happen to you by accident. Save it for later.
7. Your date must keep 1 foot on the ground. Every 80s rock video has that crowd panning shot in which several girls are visible on guys shoulders waving their arms to the music. Well, this is not the 80s, and you could get beaten for that kind of bullsh!t behavior. Its dangerous and obstructs even the tall people's views, so, like me, if you want to see better, you get your ass to the venue really early and secure your spot up front. If there is assigned seating, then you just have to pay the big bucks for a seat up front. No shoulder seating!
6. Friends don't call friends. I always laugh when I look around at a concert, while a band is playing one their bigger hits, and see tons of people with their phones in the air, playing the song to a friend who is on the line. I've gotten these voicemails before, and I've also called people from a show to do the same thing. You're not hurting anyone by trying to share the love, just don't expect to actually speak to whoever your calling. Ducking down, doesn't help. Putting one finger into your other ear doesn't help. Just don't try. It makes you look stupid.
5. The band doesn't want your cheap crap. How much stuff do you think stage crews have to throw away at the end of any arena show? Teddy bears, t-shirts, demo cds...do you really want to be the one responsible for the musician slipping on your junk and busting his ass? Didn't think so.
4. Leave your balls at home. Why do people bring beach balls to concerts? I can't come up with an explanation for it, other than the "oooohhh aaaaaahhh" factor that some nit-wits get from seeing a large crowd do something in unison like the wave at a baseball game. Getting beaned in the back of the head with a plastic rainbow ball isn't my idea of fun. But then again, I'm a genius with an amazing sense of humor, so what the hell do I know?
3. If you must yell out a request, make sure the band hasn't already played it. This is funny! I've heard Eddie Vedder embarrass the hell out of a jackass fan who shouted a request that was played during the pre-set. If you're fan enough to think you deserve a request, then you should be fan enough to a) get to the show early so you don't miss anything and b) stay sober enough to remember what you've heard. If you missed it, you're only wasting your own money, but I'll gladly laugh at you when the crowd, and the band rips you to shreds. Loser.
2. BTW, you are not actually in the band. Back in my Limp Bizkit and Korn days, I saw a great many fans jump on stage, only to be either tossed off Akon-style by a security guard, or in my case, led off side stage gently. It is distracting, and now that we're grown-ups (at least in the eyes of the IRS), its not cool. In my defense, LB and Korn welcomed the action, and I didn't go willingly anyway. It was either get squashed to death by the crowd, or make a go for the stage. Thankfully, I lived to see my 21st bday.
1. When the show is over, go home. This is a tough one for me to deal with. When Pearl Jam shows end, I feel devastated that the magic has ended. The Jamily and I usually make our way to the front of the stage where we then scour the floor for unclaimed guitar picks. Then, when we're shooed out of the venue, we reconvene outside in the parking lot, to sober up or drink more, whatever the case may be, and hang out with our friends. We've just experienced our favorite band in action and that causes for celebration and unity. Leave us alone, and just let us have our moment. We don't expect you to understand.

Support the Internet Radio Equality Act

KEEP NET RADIO ALIVE!

If you listen to streamed radio broadcasts online at work like I and many of my friends do, you may have noticed that today, June 26, 2007 is a national Internet Radio Day of Silence.

The reason for this to encourage SUPPORT for H.R. 2060, otherwise known as the Internet Radio Equality Act, which has been introduced in the House of Representatives, to nullify the March 2, 2007 determination of the Copyright Royalty Judges to increase the royalties paid by online radio content providers.

"July 15, when collection begins on the new royalty fees, literally will be the day the music died. Most Internet radio Webcasters will be driven out of business because of a massive retroactive royalty rate that is above total revenues for most in the business. For large Webcasters, the royalty increase could be between 40 percent and 70 percent of revenues. For small Webcasters the royalty increase could reach up to 1,200 percent of revenues."...

“Our bill is about standing up for folks ranging from a small Webcaster in a basement in Corvallis to an innovative startup in Beaverton to a new band trying to be heard in Portland to a huge music fan in Coos Bay” [Senator, Sam] Wyden said. “Keeping Internet radio alive is part of a broader issue that is important to me -- keeping the e-commerce engine running by preventing discrimination against it.”

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

After hearing"Weapon of Choice" several times on AOL Radio, and really getting into it, I decided to listen to more from the new album, Baby 81, by California indie rockers, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They have cleverly posted a sampler from Baby 81, which was released on RCA/ Island last month, on their myspace page. You can also watch BRMC videos, including some from their current tour, on Youtube. Though I haven't listened to the full album yet, I can safely say I like what I have heard so far! Even if the rest of the album was crap, which it does NOT appear to be, they have already hooked me with the single, "Weapon of Choice", which grows on you like hair on an Italian woman's lip! BRMC has just announced that they will be accompanying Kings of Leon on their upcoming fall US tour, including a stop at Radio City Music Hall. Yay!

A few things everyone should know...

A few things everyone should know….

1. Going out on a Wednesday night is fodder for Thursday morning “I hate me because…” games
2. If it smells like beer farts in your office, yet you are certain it wasn’t you….its you.
3. Having another shot doesn’t make the cute guy’s girlfriend disappear.
4. Taking a shower at 4am doesn’t remedy anything
5. Popcorn dipped in peanut butter is not crafty, its stupid.
6. Bagels are always worth being 7 min late for work
7. Even 70 year old women know when you have been taking a “power nap” at your desk.
8. That freakish drunk guy on the subway that you secretly laughed at probably looked better than you
9. Most likely, you gave the bar tender a 40% tip, but that’s ok because he reminded you of Jared Leto.
10. Don’t answer any phone calls from a 646 area code. You accidentally gave our your real phone number while playing the “You will buy me a drink whether you like it or not” game.

Authentic Re Prints of Rolling Stone Covers

In case you're interested, Rolling Stone is now selling authentic re-prints of some of their hottest covers from their 40 years in print! You can choose a few different sizes, and even have it mounted and framed if you like. Prices aren't bad: they range from under $20 for a 12x10 plain print, to close to $100 for framed prints. I, of course, searched for Pearl Jam covers, and the one above is the only one they're offering at the moment. As you know, Eddie appeared on two coveres himself, most recently in 2006. This group shot from 1993 is probably the best one, and the one Eddie himself prefers because its got the whole band. I recall a certain humble rock star wiping his ass on stage with a copy of the 2006 cover in Cincinnatti...or was it Pittsburgh? The whole weekend was a fabulous blur for me! Anyhoo, check out the website and search through the covers available. I, personally, think they make great wall decor for any music lover!

Bonnaroo webcast

Not heading to Tennessee for Bonnaroo this weekend? Me neither :( That's ok though, because the fabulous people at AT&T Blue Room are going to be streaming the show LIVE on the Internet all weekend! The excitement of a music festival in the comfort of your living room! That's a pretty decent consolation prize, eh?

Tribeca Drive In at Rockefeller Center (sans cars)

This sounds amazing! The first movie I saw at the drive-in was Howard The Duck, with my mom in 1986. She let me sit on the hood of the car on a blanket, and I watched all the people around me, also sitting on top of their cars, more than I watched that actual movie! We don't have to miss out on new memories like this one just because we're city slickers! Check out this amazing event, put on by the Tribeca Film Festival:

Lollapalooza schedule is up!

ATTENTION LOLLAPALOOZA 2007 ATTENDEES!

CLICK HERE to get the official schedule for Lollapalooza 2007! I am already experiencing anxiety over the situation. When planning out your personal schedule for the festival, I have the following recommendations/ kernels of insight:

1. Take note of which stage is on which end of the park, and be aware that it takes a full 20 minutes to walk from one end to the other.
2. There are 4 main stages: two on each far end of the park. The 2007 festival map is not currently available, but the 2006 festival map is still online.
3. 3 of the 4 main stages from last year (all named after sponsors) have the same names: Bud Light, Adidas, and AT&T. I believe that the former Q101 stage is the new Myspace stage this year.
4. If my hypothesis is correct, and if Lolla follows the same layout, roughly, as last year, then the Bud Light and Adidas stages will be on the same end of the park, while the Myspace and AT&T stages will both be on the opposite end. BE AWARE OF THIS GEOGRAPHIC HURDLE!
5. Also, there are a few mini stages in between the two main ends, but do not get distracted! Make your schedule and stick to it! You don't want to end up missing two bands you would have liked to see just because you got caught in the crossfire.
6. Plan your meals and bathroom breaks for lulls in your personal schedule. It can take up to 30 mintues to use the facilities and grab a beer or snack.

I know I have thrown alot at you all at once, but get ahold of yourself! This is SERIOUS business. This is the highlight of my summer, ladies and gentlemen!

Once I have decided on a tentative schedule, I'll post it for all to see. Until then, I am nervously biting the tip of my highlighter, and mulling over my print-outs of the schedule.

GOOD LUCK!

New Editors Album: An End Has A Start

I was just listening to Brand New Indie on AOL XM, when I recognized the distinct vocals of Tom Smith, from the Editors. (Last year at Lollapalooza, when I was asked by some SPIN interns which of the festival's performers I would want to sleep with, Tom was my man!) I did not, however recognize the song Tom was singing, called Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors, and for a very good reason: it is brand new! The Editors will release their new album, An End Has A Start, on June 25, 2007, featuring 10 new tracks, including Smokers... .

Watch the video for Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors below

Lyrics to Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors
By: Editors

Pull the blindfold down
So your eyes can't see
Now run as fast as you can
Through this field of trees

Say goodbye to everyone
You have ever known
You are not gonna see them ever again

I can't shake this feeling I've got
My dirty hands, have I been in the wars?
The saddest thing that I'd ever seen
Were smokers outside the hospital doors

Someone turn me around
Can I start this again?

How can we wear our smiles
With our mouths wide shut
'Cause you stopped us from singin'

I can't shake this feeling I've got
My dirty hands, have I been in the wars?
The saddest thing that I'd ever seen
Were smokers outside the hospital doors

Someone turn me around
Can I start this again?
Now someone turn us around
Can we start this again?

We've all been changed
From what we were
Our broken parts
Left smashed off the floor

I can't believe you
If I can't hear you
I can't believe you
If I can't hear you

We've all been changed
From what we were
Our broken parts
Smashed off the floor

We've all been changed
From what we were
Our broken parts
Smashed off the floor

Someone turn me around
(We've all been changed from what we were)
Can I start this again?
(Our broken parts smashed off the floor)
Now someone turn us around
(We've all been changed from what we were)
Can we start this again?
(Our broken parts smashed off the floor)

More Pearl Jam in Movies

Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam are no strangers to movie soundtracks. Just off the top of my head I can think of a handful of soundtracks they've appeared on including Singles (1992), Dead Man Walking (1996), I Am Sam (2002), and most recently, Reign Over Me(2007).

Here are two more films on which Eddie Vedder, and Pearl Jam appear.

Body of War, Documentary (2007)
"Body of War is an intimate and transformational feature documentary about the true face of war today. Meet Tomas Young, 25 years old, paralyzed from a bullet to his spine — wounded after serving in Iraq for less than a week. Body of War is his coming home story as he evolves into a new person, dealing with his disability and finding his own unique and passionate voice against the war. The film is produced and directed by Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro; Karen Bernstein is co-producer; and Bernadine Colish serves as editor. The film features two original songs by Eddie Vedder. Body of War is a nakedly honest portrayal of what it's like inside the body, heart and soul of this extraordinary and heroic young man." More

Body of War features the song, No More, which was written and performed by Eddie Vedder, specifically for the film.

Body of War Trailer:

A Conversation between Eddie Vedder and Thomas Young from Body of War.

Surf's Up
This feature-length animated film, about surfing penguins, set to be released nationwide on June 8 by Sony Pictures, has a soundtrack which includes Big Wave, from Pearl Jam's 2006 self-titled album.
